You haven't heard of Ben Bratton? You will. Ben, an African-American young man who grew up in a middle class neighborhood in Queens, New York, just broke through the color barrier in the under-reported and intensely competitive world of fencing. Yes, fencing. Ben and the US fencing team took home America's first gold medal in fencing's World Championship in Kiev, Ukraine. How did a kid like Ben get involved and become successful in fencing? It's, in part, due to a program that brings the unique sport of fencing to inner-city youth. The Peter Westbrook Foundation, a program aimed at using fencing as a means to help youth from underserved communities to develop life skills, helped uncover Ben's unique talents in the sport. For Ben, fencing became not a hobby, but a passion -- one that would give him the courage to quit his job for the chance at becoming a top fencing athlete in the world.
